Day 1

As expected, we got up late and fiddled about. We took the covers off the LS and waited for the text or bing bong to grid. None forthcoming so we all went any way, BP is on row G one from the back. A good place as there is not too much time to wait after launch.
After a bit of shuffling Crew gridded on a steep down slope leaving the towbar as a chock. We are gridded just in front of ex DGC Libelle, now belonging to Finn Sleigh comp number 5.

Turnpoints:Leighton Buzzard NE - Bottesford - Earith - Bicester North West - Bletchley - Dunstable Airfield
Task distance: 348.52 km

First Launch fallen back from 1130 to midday.
Reports from sniffer show 3kts to 2800, so launch likely to be 1200 or soon after.
Sho' enuff launching starts and goes well until one of the competitors has to teturn with a damaged canopy after colliding with a tow rope. Safe landing made.

Start gate is open at 1310, max start 3800 QFE.
At last BP comes on net and declares start at 30, 1330 obvs. The start radio, an American, reads back ....20, BP somewhat waspishly corrects him to 30 and off she goes.
2 hours later she is 1km away from the 1st tp, 1/3rd of the way round, 233km to go. Unless she gets a move on she will run out of day.
I think I shall prepare the trailer.
The vibes may have worked as her average speed has risen by 5kph to 68kph, with 198km to go, can the day last, can BP get quicker, wot do I know.
After 3 hours her avg speed has got up to 72kph with 143km to go, with the last 100km flown at 90kph. Now all she needs to do is potter on..
One small problem is she is a bit low at 3200'but she has just hooked a corker and is back to 4300', or even 5300'.
In the past the area around Cambridge has been a rollercoaster for BP she has given many of the fields a thorough examination, visiting quite a few in person. From 5000' and 125km to run, she only needs 5 good climbs.

I can see that DGC is having a good day, or at least the Astir.

Just after 5pm I notice she has landed back missing out the last 2 turns, probably a bit too early as the day did go on for another 1 1/2 hours.
So a mixed day 1 canopy broken, another on a K21 opened on aerotow and smashed completely.
BP flew 260km and landed back, dowm in 36th now.
Supper shower n bed
crew out

  1. Gerry in the Astir did 5 hours 5 mins. Allan Powell did at least 5 and a half in the Hornet and still wasn't down when I left...
